I recently came across the electronic Spectrum magazine called Outlet. For those of you who haven't heard of it, it was a mixture of reviews, views and programs. The magazine first launched in 1987, and was available on disc and also tape. But here's the thing. Whilst commercial magazines such as Crash, Your Sinclair and Sinclair User withered and died thanks to declining sales, Outlet carried on. The poor quality BASIC style games that were on many of the early issues were replaced by commercial software. Don Priestly games such as Trap Door, Dictator and 3D Tanx were included, as was Ultimate's Pentagram and even the sublime Head Over Heels. The magazine ran until the end of 1999, clocking up nearly 150 issues. A truly remarkable run for a magazine, especially since for over half its life, there was no commercially available computer to play the disc on! So when you are asked which was the longest running Spectrum magazine...you now know the REAL answer.
